| Designed to be sympathetic to, but not mimic the original barn structure, the addition was carefully added to the west side of the carriage house to both preserve the historic views from the mansion. The addition was designed to fit within the constraints of an existing stone wall that was integrated into the exterior wall lobby and entrance to the gift shop and orientation space. The carriage house's existing interior finishes were preserved “as is”. Exposed wood structure, stone walls and brick flooring dominate. Materials used in the addition, such as laminated wood beams, hardwood flooring and galvanized metal and copper are typically left with their natural finishes so the addition compliments the carriage house finishes. Other areas include flexible multi-purpose and exhibit spaces to showcase other periods in the lives of Rockwood, and the Shipley and Bringhurst family. The design of an archival quality storage area for artifacts and furniture is also a part of this project. | ![]() |
