| Designed by Moeckel
Carbonell Associates Inc. in association with Muhlenberg/ Greene Architects, Ltd., the new
First Union Regional Headquarters is a 4-story, 140,000 s.f. building on Penn Square in
Reading, PA that houses a population approaching 500 people. |
 |
| The north wing of
the new building is anchored so as to define the southeast corner of Penn Square. A
2-story high arcade along Penn Street offers an expanded pedestrian walkway while
extending the view from Penn Square toward the east and to the proposed civic center site. |
 |
| The south wing of
the new building is slanted slightly off the city grid at an angle. This angled position
takes into account that most of the people coming to work will be arriving from the South
Penn Mall garage on Cherry Street. The slanted position of the building opens up a
courtyard-type space on Sixth Street offering some limited on-site parking for visitors.
The north and south wings are constructed with brick and cast stone materials. |
 |
| The mall entrance is
at the west end of the atrium, accessible from Sixth and Penn Streets, under the
protection of the building, as well as from the parking garage to the south. From the
entrance, the buildings atrium is bathed in natural light so as to introduce the
elevator lobbies and reception areas on each floor. |
